Your Windshield, the Solar Shield: The Fact You Didn’t Know About UV Protection

When we think about the windshield, safety from impact is the first thing that comes to mind. However, this vital component has a crucial health function that is often overlooked: protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

The glass used in the front windshield is mandatorily of the laminated type. This type of glass is composed of two layers of glass bonded together by an intermediate film of Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB). It is precisely this PVB layer that acts as an exceptionally effective solar filter.

The curious fact is that a standard laminated windshield blocks nearly 99% of UV-A and UV-B rays. This means that, while driving, you are highly protected from the radiation that causes premature skin aging and the deterioration of your vehicle’s interior (such as the fading of the dashboard and seats).

Interestingly, the side and rear windows (which are often tempered glass) do not offer this same level of protection without an additional tint or coating. The laminated windshield is, quietly, your car’s most robust sunscreen.
